Geography Curriculum Intent

At Smith’s Wood Primary, we place a great emphasis on the importance of Geography. Our curriculum will inspire and challenge all pupils; to enable them to become Geographical thinkers. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it.

 They engage in field work and open debates that allow them to question and analyse different perspectives, thus allowing children to develop their own opinions and respect the opinions of others. Thinking Geographically is a crucial part of the intent at Smith’s Wood primary, as it pushes children to think deeper about important Geographical issues and how these issues can impact them as individuals and the world around them.

The Geography curriculum at Smith’s Wood Primary is designed to ensure that teaching equips pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Our spiral curriculum sparks curiosity and allows the children to revisit core knowledge and progress key concepts further through immersive lessons, trips and projects. The key vocabulary and skills they acquire, through these interactive lessons are applied within their topics and help to enhance their learning in all subjects, whilst also developing their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
