This year, Children’s Mental Health Week is taking place between Monday 9th February and Friday 13th February, and is a way of bringing awareness and care to improving children’s mental health.
The theme this year is ‘This Is My Place’, and we are offering children the opportunity to take charge of their own safe spaces in school. From talking to the children, we understand that break and lunch times are fantastic ways of socialising with their peers, but children have outlined that they would love some more resources to use during these social times.
As part of Children’s Mental Health Week, our Wellbeing Warriors have decided to host a non-uniform day to raise money to buy these resources. On Friday 13th February, which is the last day of term, all children are invited to wear their own clothes for a minimum contribution of £1 on ParentPay. This money will be used to buy new resources and play equipment for KS1 and KS2 playgrounds, including updating the Learning Lodges on the KS2 patio.
Each week, during our Friday Achievement assembly, we celebrate our ‘Pupils of the Week’ from each year group. Pupils are recognised for this weekly award for a variety of reasons and are nominated by their class teacher. They may have excelled in a particular subject through the week; may have shown one, or more, of the school values in abundance, or they may have impressed their teacher, or other staff members with a huge amount of effort. Whatever they are nominated for, they are recognised in the whole school achievement assembly, receive a certificate to take home and get to wear one of our prestigious black and gold t-shirts.
During the assembly, we also celebrate children who have 100% attendance for the week and have been in school every day on time. A lucky dip, of all children who are eligible takes place, and one pupil walks away with £5 to spend on whatever they want, Standards and presentation of a child’s book, chosen at random, are also reviewed and celebrated with the school and the child, whose book has been chosen, has the chance to win a dip out of the basket of goodies, as long as they have used their best handwriting every day, completed their feed forward marking and taken care in the presentation of their date and learning objective. We are extremely proud of all of the efforts of our pupils and the Friday Achievement assembly recognises this pride.

Forget Clarkson's Farm, forget Marvel Avengers, the true Endgame happened last night at Smith's Wood Primary Academy. 10 brave and noble warriors graced the hall for the final of the Smith's Wood Games House Competition. Trust, honesty, integrity and friendship were all tested to their limits last night as our brave competitors battled for the grand total of 1200 house points and the prestigious honour of being the first ever Smith's Wood Games Champion. The games saw pupils test their problem-solving and analytical skills as they tried to work out who had been truthful and who had been ruthless. At the end of the night, our final 2 challengers faced off in a game of wits to decide if they would both leave with a split total of 600 points or if one lucky winner got to steal the prize all for themselves. In an unprecedented turn of betrayal, both players tried to steal the glory and ended the night without taking home a single house point, proving once and for all, that greed never prospers!

Last week alliances were formed, and tough decisions were made in the first ever Smith’s Wood Games. Pupils competed against each other for a grand total of 1200 house points, the challenges tested the fortitude of every pupil and pushed their teamwork skills to the limit as they battled to stay in the game. Pupils were required to reflect on and apply their personal strengths, values, and decision-making skills. The games required pupils to:

Smith's Wood Primary Academy is closed today due to the snowfall overnight. We have reviewed the school site this morning and have deemed it unsafe for pupils, parents and staff when travelling to and accessing the school site.
Today we have celebrated our pupils of the term. These children have been nominated by their class teachers to receive an end of term prize. This is a prestigious award, as the pupil of the term nominations are for those children who have impressed their teachers repeatedly over the whole of the Autumn term. We would like to congratulate all of our pupil of the term winners and thank them for showing the school values in abundance this term.
During the assembly, we also celebrate children who have 100% attendance for the week and have been in school every day on time. Today we launch the very first Smith’s Wood Podcast — and with it, the moment everyone has been building towards: the official reveal of our brand-new Smith’s Wood anthem. Over the last few days, clues have been dropping…
a rhythm, a lyric, a few notes on the piano, visual hints along the way.
This afternoon, everything connects.
The name of the new anthem is:

This launch is about more than just a song. It is about pride, identity, aspiration and the shared story of our school community. The podcast captures the excitement of the reveal, the journey leading up to it, and the voices that make Smith’s Wood what it is.

The newsletter contains a one-page guide for professionals and families, that you can download, summarising the support available across the borough.
This is an excellent starting point if you are seeking further support. It includes clear information and signposting on many topics we are frequently asked about in school, such as:
– Child behaviour and routines
