On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, both Year 5 classes had the opportunity to visit Dovedale in the Peak District as part of our learning on our Rivers topic. Children had to challenge themselves by walking up to the top of Thorpe Cloud and then enjoyed a leisurely walk by the river taking in the scenery and identifying the different parts of a river we had learnt about in class

Last half term our Year 6s took a spellbinding trip down to Warner Bros Studio Tour London - the making of Harry Potter. We immersed ourselves into all things magical: exploring the real sets, real props and real magic seen in the film series. Year 6 had time to explore the Forbidden Forest, the Hogwarts Express and even Diagon Alley!! Mischief definitely managed!!

On the 20th May, some of our Year 6 children embarked on the trip of a lifetime to Paris! They travelled by coach and enjoyed a first day of swimming and at The Explorers Hotel. On the Wednesday, the children experienced city life and travelled the River Seine by boat before climbing the 700 steps of the Eiffel Tower. All children made it to the top and it was an amazing experience for all of the children, who showed excellent perseverance to make it to the top. On the Thursday, it was time for Disneyland, where more children faced their fears. After being adventurous on all of the different rides, everyone enjoyed eating at the Rainforest Cafe before the firework and light show entertained us! On the final day, we travelled back by coach with all of our new Disney merchandise and memories to last a lifetime!

Ahoy there! Last half term, Year 2 set sail on a swashbuckling adventure for Pirate Day - measuring treasures, singing sea shanties, writing messages in bottles, baking hardtack, and hunting for gold! Dressed as pirates, our little buccaneers truly brought the high seas to life!

Each week, during our Achievement assembly, we celebrate our ‘Pupils of the Week’ from each year group. Pupils are recognised for this weekly award for a variety of reasons and are nominated by their class teacher. They may have excelled in a particular subject through the week; may have shown one, or more, of the school values in abundance, or they may have impressed their teacher, or other staff members with a huge amount of effort. Whatever they are nominated for, they are recognised in the whole school achievement assembly, receive a certificate to take home and get to wear one of our prestigious black and gold t-shirts.
During the assembly, we also celebrate children who have 100% attendance for the week and have been in school every day on time. A lucky dip, of all children who are eligible takes place, and one pupil walks away with £5 to spend on whatever they want, Standards and presentation of a child’s book, chosen at random, are also reviewed and celebrated with the school and the child, whose book has been chosen, has the chance to win a dip out of the basket of goodies, as long as they have used their best handwriting every day, completed their feed forward marking and taken care in the presentation of their date and learning objective. We are extremely proud of all of the efforts of our pupils and the Achievement assembly recognises this pride.
A special mention goes to year 2 this week as every pupil in Year 2 is being celebrated for completing their SATs with incredible effort, perseverance and determination. All pupils tried their very best, stayed positive and supported each other. We are so proud of the way they approached every challenge with resilience and a fantastic attitude. Well done year 2 – you are all true superstars!

On Sunday, Smith’s Wood’s bravest warriors graced the hallowed turf of Fortress St Andrews for the finals day of the Vertu Schools Cup. Our boys fought like gladiators against some of the toughest competition from all around the region. Our impregnable defence was unbeaten throughout the day with our lads showing perseverance and determination far above their years. Despite their best efforts and a monumentous winning streak, our team faced their toughest challenge in the final match. Spurred on by the thunderous applause and cheer of the crowd including staff, family members and friends, Smith’s Wood managed to hold off the competition all the way to the penalty stage, where sadly, in typical English football fashion, they succumbed to the dreaded penalty shootout, finishing with a well-deserved 2nd place medal. We are immensely proud of everything our boys achieved and the grace and dignity they showed in the face of defeat.
Thank you to everyone who came to support and cheer on the team.

Yesterday, we celebrated VE Day in school, full of engaging and thoughtful activities. The children immersed themselves in experiences designed to give them a deeper understanding of this significant moment in history. From learning about the events that led to Victory in Europe, to exploring the lives of people during wartime, it was a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the past and appreciate the importance of peace and unity. The children enjoyed a patriotic themed lunch and produced some beautiful work!
