On Monday, Smith's Woods finest ventured North to compete in the prestigious EFL Kids Cup. Held in Wigan, this highly converted trophy is represented by the best of the best from around the North of England. Donning the famous blue and white, the Smith's Wood boys took centre stage playing with fierce determination and super-human levels of perseverance against some of the toughest teams they were ever likely to face!
Despite a difficult introduction at the hands of Bolton and Burton, Smith's Wood dug deep to upset our hosts Wigan, to dismantle Hollywood's finest, Wrexham and shatter the dreams of Huddersfield, earning them a rightful place in the quarter-finals. In an intensely competitive battle between 2 highly skilled veteran teams, our boys in blue gave it everything they had and the only way to separate them was a dreaded penalty shoot-out.
Unfortunately, heartache won out on the day and Smith's Wood lost out by the barest of margins.
We are immensely proud of the team and the players will forever go down in Smith's Wood folk lore as the Wigan 9!
